Important things you need to know about vitamins, in poultry production

A vitamin is a group of organic substance, it is essential for metabolism, and the deficiency of vitamins may cause diseases in humans as well as animals.

The Deficiency of vitamins in poultry may cause many diseases and syndromes. Basically, vitamins are divided into two categories fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins. The fat-soluble vitamins are a, d, e, and k. The water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the b vitamins which has their own benefits, and the deficiency may cause different type of diseases.

Vitamin A helps in maintaining growth, and reproduction in poultry and animals.

The Deficiency of vitamin A may cause different problems in animals & poultry, for example, Eye issues like watery eyes, night blindness, and crusty material in the nostrils & eyelids, which May reduce egg production & hatchability.

Vitamin D helps with the proper absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorous, which are required for bone formation, overall growth, and eggshell formation, and to increase CHO metabolism in poultry.

Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency

  • Soft eggshell

  • Rickets

  • Osteomalacia (softening of bones due to deficiency of vit d or ca)

  • Beak and claws become soft and pliable

  • Hypocalcemia

  • Eod (endochondral ossification defect) bone deformation, fracture & lameness

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and important for normal neurological functions. It helps in muscle structure and reproduction system.

The Deficiency of vitamin E may cause encephalomalacia (crazy chick disease), exudative diathesis in young birds, and muscular dystrophy in older and mature birds.

Vitamin k is essential for the synthesis of prothrombin, thus it plays an important role in clotting mechanisms and also has a protective effect against coccidiosis.

The Deficiency of vitamin k may cause an increase of blood spots in eggs, hemorrhages in the legs and breasts,s and a failure of blood clotting, and increases in the time of blood coagulation.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is important for proper carbohydrate metabolism. The deficiency of vitamin b1 shows anorexia, loss of weight, ruffled feathers, dropping of wings, and paralysis of muscles in birds.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is naturally a part of enzyme systems so plays a vital role in metabolism. In the early stage of birds, the deficiency of vitamin b2 may cause diarrhea and “curled toe paralysis”

The affected birds walk upon their hocks with the aid of their wings. In adult birds, decreased egg production increased embryonic mortality, and dead in-shell chicks, with dwarfing and clubbing down feathers are seen.

Vitamin b3 (niacin) is important for energy metabolism, it helps to enhance protein.

The Deficiency of vitamin b3 may cause dermatitis, and black tongue (rare in poultry).

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) pantothenic acid deficiency is somewhat rare in chickens since this vitamin is ubiquitously found in foods of plant and animal origin.

Deficiency of vitamin b5 in birds may cause roughened and ruffled feathers which often become brittle and broken or fall off, reduced growth and stunted feather growth, and reduced egg production in laying hens

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) is important for the proper metabolism of amino acids. Spasmodic convulsions and jerky movements are seen in sick birds, due to a deficiency of vitamin b6.

Deficiency may also show retarded growth and dermatitis in animals and birds.

Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) is involved with nucleic acid synthesis, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and methyl synthesis.

The Deficiency of vitamin b12 shows slowed growth, poor feed utilization, and reduced hatchability in birds.

Vitamin C

Poultry can synthesize vitamin c, so there is no dietary requirement for this vitamin.

But the synthesis may slow down due to some stress conditions like extreme temperature, and vaccination, then the supplementation of vitamin c is required.
